Commercial real estate investor, developer and asset manager, Firethorn Trust, has passed a major milestone at its purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) scheme in Leith Walk, Edinburgh, with completion of the building’s substructure.

Ogilvie Construction has been appointed to deliver the six-storey block, which will create high quality accommodation for 230 students when it completes next year.

S Harrison appoints contractor and work starts on new Edinburgh hotel

Construction work has started on an impressive new 157-bedroom hotel in the Haymarket area of Edinburgh after property development company, S Harrison, appointed Ogilvie Construction as the principal contractor on the project.

The development will see a 1970s office building, which is currently known as Osborne House, transformed into a new hotel, complete with a residents’ bar, restaurant and lounge area on the ground floor and an outdoor seating terrace. Following part demolition of the existing building, two new accommodation wings will be built to the rear, together with a new storey above the existing building.

Work is underway to build a 40-bedroom care complex and 46 extra care flats alongside a day-care unit in Bonnyrigg.

Ogilvie Construction is building the development, which will be constructed to Passivhaus green-energy standards, on behalf of Midlothian Health and Social Care Partnership and Midlothian Council. It sits at the former St Mary’s primary school site bounded by Polton Street, Moorfoot View and Moorfoot Place. 

The Intermediate Care facility is for up to 40 short term residents and will provide assessment, rehabilitation, interim and respite care.

Bernard makes the final

Ogilvie Construction manager, Bernard McLaughlan, is celebrating after being shortlisted in the finals of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Scotland Awards 2022 for the Project Manager of the Year category. In the fifteen years since he joined the company, Bernard has successfully managed a range of major construction projects including:

  • Great Tapestry of Scotland Museum, Galashiels
  • Premier Inn Hotel, Aviemore
  • Combworks Student Accommodation, Aberdeen
  • Orchard Brae ASN School, Aberdeen

He is currently managing a project to deliver 118 new affordable homes in Aberdeen.

The team behind the design and build of the Great Tapestry of Scotland visitor centre in Galashiels is celebrating another accolade after winning the RICS Scotland Award for best public building.

The building, designed by Page\Park Architect and built by Ogilvie Construction, consists of gallery spaces, a visitor centre, café, workshop area and offices. The front of the neighbouring B listed post office was refurbished to accommodate staff and studio space.

Colin Smith MRICS, chair of the judging panel, said: “These winning projects are a true testament to the hard work of property professionals in Scotland. The pandemic has led to the industry facing much uncertainty and challenging conditions, but we were delighted, and very proud to see such innovative building projects appearing across our cities and towns.”

Earlier this year, the building won the Design Award for New Build (Commercial) in the Scottish Borders Design Awards. The visitor centre has also received the highest 5-star rating for visitor experience by Visit Scotland, which reflects an ‘exceptional customer experience.’

The Great Tapestry of Scotland is a unique project to stitch the entire story of Scotland from pre-history to modern times and through its artistry and visual storytelling, making Scotland’s history, heritage and culture accessible to all.

Ogilvie Construction has opened a new office in Aberdeen as part of a programme of investment to continue to grow its business in the Northeast of Scotland.

Operations Manager, David Mason and Commercial Manager, Ryan Green, will be based in the new office in the Westhill area of the city.

Ogilvie Construction has handed over the first building in the new Borders Innovation Park, completing phase one of the build programme.

The new facility creates 15,000 square metres of high-quality office space with a car park to the rear and landscaping that ties into the station plaza.

The Borders Innovation Park offices provide the first step in the development of the strategically important Tweedbank Masterplan and is an important destination for new businesses, driving economic growth.

Ogilvie Construction has passed a major milestone in the building programme for the new AC by Marriott hotel in Glasgow, completing the structural steel framework.

The 245-bed hotel, being built by Ogilvie for the Chris Stewart Group, will form part of a £100 million mixed use development to transform the north east corner of George Square.  It will incorporate the refurbished grade A listed Parish Halls alongside the new build section.

Concrete floors were laid as the steel frame was erected and the next phase of the build will see the application of precast panels for the façade, along with roof works, windows and internal partitions.  The hotel is due for completion in mid 2022.

The development will fill an 80 year old gap site in the city, bringing style, elegance and all the associated amenities to create a first class experience for business and leisure guests.

Ogilvie Construction is celebrating after landing an internationally-recognised award for demonstrating high health and safety standards for the seventh consecutive year.

Ogilvie has received a RoSPA Gold Medal Health and Safety Award for working hard to ensure its staff get home safely to their families at the end of every working day.

Organisations receiving a RoSPA Award are recognised as being world-leaders in health and safety practice. Every year, nearly 2,000 entrants vie to achieve the highest possible accolade in what is the UK’s longest-running H&S industry awards.
